I saw the very first video that you posted a day or two ago. It looked like a solid, working piece of equipment. I don't believe the touch screen form factor will make it onto Boost, but the Android people have already said they're pushing hard to get model into all price points all the way from the $100 up form factors. I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola would push out a model that has the roller ball from the G1 and remove the touch screen to make a budget Android phone for the Boost/Nextel market. Something tells me the more advanced/expensive models may not come very soon.

Stolen Opus One Ends up Online

by AndroidGuys on Saturday, 12 December 2009

Here’s an odd tale of sorts. A YouTube user who goes by the handle of jay84305 allegedly grabbed a Motorola Opus One from somewhere in Florida’s South Beach area after a Motorola or Sprint employee dropped it. He then decided he would post a few pictures and videos of it. As of now, the videos have already been removed. Our friends over at AndroidAndme were able to pick up a couple of screen grabs from the videos prior to deletion. We used one these pictures at the top left of this post. Apparently, the videos detailed the push-to-talk feature the video camera and some other Android basics.

The story takes a slight turn from here. After putting his Boost SIM card in, Jay decided to reach out to Sprint Nextel about the handset. Supposedly they replied to him saying that they are testing it and that he’ll start seeing campaigns related to it online and through other outlets.

We’ve reached out to Sprint a couple of times in the past regarding other handsets that were in development (HTC Hero, Samsung Moment) and were met with much less of a response. We got the “we cannot comment on handsets that have not been announced” canned email. Ironic.

So to recap: A guy who happens to be a Boost customer finds a phone on the street. He reaches out to the carrier and gets a validation of sorts. He also knows about hands-on videos and decides to upload a few of his own. Said videos are then taken offline, leading us to believe it’s a legitimate phone, possibly nearing completion.

I'm sure his lack of information was completely genuine. In addition to being the last to know about new handsets, Sprint employees often go the extra mile by also being completely apathetic.

Motorola Opus One specifications

Boy Genius Report on December 21st, 2009

When we say we have specifications, boy, do we mean it. One of our connects has sent us the full rundown on Motorla’s Opus One (their first iDEN Android handset) that we revealed a little while back. The features on the device are actually pretty reasonable, and we’d imagine it to sell for a reasonable attractive price-point at release. The Motorola Opus One will run Android 1.5 with iDEN service enhancements, make use of a “Zeus” CPU, and will feature a 3 megapixel autofocus camera.

Detailed list of full specs:
  • 3.1″ hVGA 320×480 capacitative touchscreen display
  • 3 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
  • Accelerometer
  • Proximity sensor
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
  • Bluetooth
  • microSD card slot
  • 2.5mm headset jack
  • Home, Menu, Back, Speaker buttons are capacitive buttons with haptic feedback
  • iDEN PTT & PTX
  • Android LBS which is integrated into the iDEN GPS engine
  • “Enterprise email”
  • Plastic-molded housing with some rubberized texture finishes
  • 58mm in width, 118mm in length
  • 100g weight
  • 512MB Flash / 256MB of RAM
  • 64k and 128k iDEN SIM card support
  • A-GPS
  • Motorola dual-mic technology noise-canceling for noisy enviroments
  • Flash Lite v3.1.x

Some of the preloaded apps include: corporate email client with ActiveSync support, MOTONAV navigation app, barcode scanner, and document viewer.

That’s what we have for you on the Motorola Opus One at this time. Not the most mind-blowing Android device, but with it being an iDEN device and all, we’ll cut it some slack and even say that it could do reasonably well at launch.

I'm just wondering if MOTONAV will be a free service much like Google's is on the Droid, or if it'll be a subscription thing like TeleNav, and if it's just a rebranded version of one of those services (IE, "Sprint Navigation" = Telenav)

I ran into the following article that describes MotoNav (for another phone platform) at this site:

Quote:
What is MOTONAV? MOTONAV is a unique route guidance software package that uses both GPS satellites for position dataand MOTONAV’s service center for traffic congestion data (when available). GPS data is obtained with thewireless GPS receiver, traffic data is obtained from the MOTONAV service center via your phone, and mapinformation is stored on the included memory card. Together, MOTONAV calculates the optimal route toyour destination. Any turn is okay with MOTONAV. You can deviate from your planned route at any time. For example, youcan avoid traffic, detour around road blocks, or take an alternate road. MOTONAV recalculates your routefrom your current location.MOTONAV optimizes your route based on local traffic conditions (where available) and guides you aroundtraffic jams wherever it is practical. Easy to understand direction symbols and pleasant voice instructionsguide you to your destination.MOTONAV’s output takes the form of: Maps, Voice alerts, Voice prompts, and Visual alerts:•Maps are used to show your current location and to show where you are going. •Voice alerts are used to warn you when certain events happen or thresholds are exceeded.(Example: “You have exceeded the speed limit!” or “GPS is not available!”).•Voice Prompts are used to tell you when and where to perform an action (Example: “In 200 yardsturn right”).•Visual alerts are used to warn you of non-critical events. (Example: “Low battery”, “Audio ismuted”, or “Data transfer in process”
Further reading makes me think that (at least for the phone in that manual) MotoNav is a software purchase that uses your phone's data network. Of course, all that may change when the Opus One comes out.
